Faux Bone China is a series of sculptures consisting of a cowboy hat made of glass, porcelain parts bound into a protective jacket, chinoiserie patterned cast bronze chopine heels, and ceramic archery equipment. Through contrasting physically heavy but visually delicate materials, the sculptures evoke a tension between the body and the proposed dressware. Though they are intended to protect or to empower, the objects ultimately become a burden to their bearer. The artworks trace historical pathways of cultural, social, and individual identities that have been neglected or misrepresented in Western art history.
These historical identities all connect at the level of the racialized and gendered body, which is referred to in imagery found in the sculptures. Blending together both personal experiences as well as art history, these details express the complex nature of femme power and performativity in forced contact with the influence of cultural norms, the patriarchal gaze, and the environment at large. Included, for example, are references to the works of non-male artists such Claude Cahun, Properzia de’ Rossi and Artemisia Gentileschi. The tension between the body and its covers is further made visible through colourful chinoiserie patterns, elements of intrusive hands and motifs of tear-stained eyes and Artemis’ arrows.
Faux Bone China was exhibited at the Temnikova & Kasela Gallery, Tallinn in 2024, and at Pitted Dates in Helsinki, Liste Art Fair in Basel, and at the Tampere Art Museum in 2025.
